Fluoride Therapy

Fluoride treatments are a quick, painless, and effective way to ensure your child’s teeth stay healthy and cavity-free.
It’s a preventive measure that involves application of fluoride solution to the teeth.
This mineral helps strengthen tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from plaque and sugars in the mouth to prevent decay.

Professional fluoride treatments are safe and effective when applied by a qualified dental professional. The amount of fluoride used is carefully controlled to avoid overexposure.

Preparation

Cleaning

The dentist or dental hygienist first cleans the child’s teeth to remove any plaque or food particles. This ensures the fluoride can be absorbed more effectively.

Application

Gel, Foam, or Varnish

The fluoride treatment comes in the form of a gel, foam, or varnish. The dentist may use a brush, swab, tray, or mouth rinse to apply the fluoride.

Direct Application

If using a gel or foam, it is often placed in a tray that fits over the child’s teeth. The tray is left in place for a few minutes to allow the fluoride to coat the teeth thoroughly.

Varnish

If using varnish, it is painted directly onto the teeth with a small brush. It hardens quickly upon contact with saliva.

Post-Application

The child is usually advised not to eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes after the treatment. This allows the fluoride to fully penetrate and absorb into the enamel.

Specific instructions on oral care following the treatment to maximize its effectiveness.

The treatment is typically done every six months during regular dental check-ups, but it may be recommended more frequently depending on the child’s risk of cavities.
